Maintenance Manual

At RATHECOM LTD, we select materials that are meant to last — but with just a little care, your planter will not only endure, it will age with grace and character.

🏺 General Use Tips

  • Drainage is key: Always ensure excess water can escape. Most of our pots come with drainage holes. If your plant needs more moisture retention, use a plastic liner inside.

  • Avoid overwatering: Use trays or saucers to collect excess water and protect your floors or decking.

  • Indoor placement: Keep away from direct heat sources (radiators or heating vents) to avoid cracks or drying.

  • Outdoor placement: Place on stable, level surfaces. Elevate slightly to allow air circulation underneath.

🌿 Material-Specific Care

Terracotta Planters

  • Terracotta breathes naturally and develops a beautiful patina over time.

  • Winter care: Bring indoors or empty completely to prevent freezing and cracking.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft brush and warm water. Avoid detergents that can seep into the porous clay.

Fiberstone Planters

  • Lightweight, durable, and frost-resistant.

  • Suitable for year-round outdoor use, but may benefit from covering during severe winters.

  • Cleaning: Wipe with a damp cloth. For stains, use mild soap and water — no harsh chemicals.

Cast Stone Planters

  • Extremely durable and designed for permanent placement.

  • Can be left outdoors all year round in most climates.

  • Aging naturally: These planters develop character with age — moss and weather marks are natural and desirable by many.

  • Cleaning: Use water and a stiff brush. Pressure washers can be used cautiously.

💡 Seasonal Maintenance

Spring:

  • Refresh potting soil

  • Check for drainage blockages

  • Clean off winter grime or mineral buildup

Autumn/Winter:

  • Remove any dead roots or decaying material

  • Empty and store non-frost-proof planters indoors

  • Cover outdoor pots if located in extreme climates

❗ What to Avoid

  • Don’t use chemical cleaners or bleach — they may degrade the planter surface and harm plants.

  • Avoid sudden temperature shocks (e.g. moving a frozen pot into a warm room).

  • Never lift large planters by the rim — always lift from the base to avoid cracking.
